Last Friday, Panasonic introduced the LUMIX FZ150 Digital camera. It is part of their 3D camera line as a digital point-and-shoot. With a 24x Optical zoom and 25mm Ultra Wide-Amgle Leica lens, the 12.1 megapixel MOS sensor camera can also shoot HD video (1920 x 1080 60p).

“Panasonic continues to strive to meet the photography demands of its consumers by providing unique features and advanced technology in all our LUMIX digital cameras,” said Darin Pepple, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company.

Panasonic also announced their HDC-Z10000 camera, another 2D/3D camcorder with low-light and macro shooting ability. You will be able to record close in low light, thanks to the f/1.5 lens and focus as close at 17.8 inches. The Z10000 has a 10x zoom for 3D and 12x for 2D. It contains a dual 3MOS sensor  (each with 6.57 MP resolution).

GNC #694 No Constraints

I talk about constraints tonight, you will notice show is 1:23:00 I have realized I have been feeling constrained and rushed with the 1:10:00 limit I imposed on myself. Unless I get a barrage of email begging me to go back the show is going back to a semi un-constrained time limit.

My First 3D Movie

Today I saw my first 3D film in a cinema…and it’s very likely to be my last. Not because I’m thinking of shuffling off this mortal coil but because it was a second rate experience at a premium price.

Where do I start? First of all one size does not fit all. The glasses suitable for an adult are not going to fit a 3 year old so why there aren’t smaller frames for young ones at children’s films, I’ve no idea.

Second, I came away from a 2 hour film feeling absolutely knackered and ready for a good snooze. This is not normal for me and I can only assume that it’s something to do with the 3D effect. At least it didn’t give me a headache.

The polarising glasses make everything extra dark too. You fumble around in the dark trying to find packets of sweets before finally taking off the glasses so you can see where they are. Not conducive to the cinematic experience.

There’s no doubt that the 3D effect works, but after admiring it for the first 10 minutes, I’m not convinced it really adds that much to the film. Story and character development are worth so much more and you don’t expect to pay extra for those (though admittedly you don’t always get them).

Movie directors, don’t waste your time on 3D filming: just hire better writers for decent plots as I won’t be returning to a 3D film. Stick to 2D and I’ll be regular customer with my family.

GNC-2011-03-07 #653 Not the Charlie Sheen Show!

I spend a few moments talking about the technical portions of the Charlie Sheen show on Ustream. Considering the train wreck that happened on their inaugural show on Saturday makes me proud of all the new media creators that produce their own shows, and do so with 50x the professionalism of what I observed Saturday night. I have a new giveaway starting tonight listen to win. This show is action packed from the beginning to the end! Become an Insider or Make a donation to the show to qualify for the contest.

XpanD Universal 3D Glasses

Michael Williams from XpanD takes Andy McCaskey through the benefits of their range of universal 3D glasses.

Unbelievably, the 3D glasses provided with active-shutter 3D TVs are not always compatible between brands. It’s sometimes possible to make them compatible by wearing the glasses upside down but clearly this is an unsatisfactory solution for long-term viewing. I know, you couldn’t make some of this stuff up.

Fortunately, XpanD have introduced their active-shutter Universal 3D Glasses (X103) which are compatible with all makes of TV and they can be used in XpanD-equipped movie theatres and cinemas. The glasses have a small button on the frame that allow the user to toggle between the different brands of 3D TV. Available now for $129 which is comparable with the brand-name models, so why not buy a pair that you can use in your house, your friend’s house, your local sports bar?

For real 3D aficionados,  XpanD has a pair of Youniversal glasses (X104) that are the ultimate glasses for tweaking and customising. Via iPhone and Android apps, the user is able to alter the settings of the glasses to adjust for environmental settings such as room lighting or medical conditions, e.g lazy eye. Available in April and price TBA.

GNC-2011-02-07 #645 Back from Chicago!

Fresh back from the Windy City! The snow and cold weather was ok for a couple of days, but I prefer 80 and cool trade winds. Lots of great tech to cover tonight.. I have some great opportunity to someone that would like to underwrite the show for a couple of episodes, drop me a line if your interested. I should be in Hawaii over the next couple of weeks so it will be great to get back into a regular rhythm for the show production.

Gunnar 3D Glasses

Gunnar, a high-end eyeglass manufacturer is introducing a line of 3D glasses.  Their glasses carry a claim that they are not only outdoor sunglasses, but also adjust to indoors lighting and reduce eye strain when using a PC.  But, their newest line are 3D!  So now you can take your own set of glasses to the theater.  Jeffrey Powers stops by the booth and gets a hands-on with a couple of pairs.  You will have to watch the video to get the details.  The 3D line reatails from $99 – $149.

Sensio’s 3D Technology

Tom interviews Canadian firm, Sensio on their development of stereoscopic cinematic technologies – that’s 3D to you and me – and the launch of three new products.

  1. The Sensio Hi-Fi 3D Codec for superior quality 3D video, which is being adopted by several content providers.
  2. The Sensio Autodetect, which analyses video and determines the 2D or 3D format (side-by-side or top-and-bottom). Very handy for hardware manufacturers who don’t have to produce different models for different markets.
  3. The Sensio S2D switch, which converts 3D content into 2D content. Although this seems niche at the moment, as more 3D-only content becomes available, there will be times when it needs to be displayed two-dimensionally, e.g. when there  aren’t enough 3D glasses to go round.

All of these technologies are aimed content creators and manufacturers and the average consumer will never know that their set-top box or over-the-top box uses these technologies. Regardless, it’s interesting to see the technologies announced now that you’ll be using in a year’s time.

The GoPro HD Camera

GoPro HD CameraGoPro showed off their latest line of HD and 3D Cameras at CES 2011. These cameras are made specifically for filming during participation in extreme sports. They can be worn on your helmet, chest or even mounted on a vehicle. The GoPro HD has about 2 1/2 hours of battery life. The battery is a 1100 mAh Lithium-ion battery, they do offer an extended battery pack which double the battey life. There is also an separate LCD video screen attachment. The screen attaches to the camera like a building bloc. The camera can film at 780p, 960p or 1080p. The camera also shoots stills at 2/5/10/30 and 60 second intervals. The housing is tough and waterproof, it is made to take a beating. The cost for the HD camera is $299

They also showed off a “3D” camera, which is actually two HD cameras with a synchronizing port and a housing group that holds the two cameras together. The first camera controls the second camera and when finished filming. You can use the GoPro software that’s included to merge the two film together to produce a 3D film. It is set to launch on Feb 1 along with the LCD video screen attachment. They have some video on their site which is pretty amazing, if you are into filming while doing an extreme sports I recommend taking a look at this camera.
