Fun For The Math Geeks

Tomorrow is April 1st. Besides being the Conflicker worm deploy date, it is also a “square day.” We had a square day already this year, March 3, and another on March 5.

A “square day” is one in which, with the application of a little mathematical numerology, you can see a square root. March 3rd in mathematical terms is 03-03-09, or 3*3=9. April 1st is also a square day, although not in as obvious a way. April 1, 2009 is 04/01/2009, or 4012009, which has 2003 as a square root (2003*2003 = 4012009.)

Okay, somewhat obtuse, but I work with a lot of mathematicians, and they are a hoot to listen to when they go off on tangents like this. Persons born in 1980 can say in the year 2025 that they are in their “square year,” as 45*45=2025. I don’t have the brains to figure out when my “square year” would be, if there was one at all.

For mathematicians, this type of twisting of numbers is simply a matter of recognizing patterns in numbers, and using those patterns to draw mathematical conclusions. I know my brain doesn’t work that way. I’m glad to see that mathematicians have a sense of humor, too. Makes them a lot less scary, in my math-phobic brain.

Encarta Going Dark

The category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed

How true that is.

Microsoft will stop selling the Encarta software in June and the site will disband on October 31st with Encarta: Japan going dark on Dec. 31st. If you have Encarta Premium, you may be eligible for a refund.Tech Support will still honor support calls until 2012. It is all outlined in this MSN Encarta Notice.

Encarta has been around since 1993. Microsoft purchased rights to and incorporated Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia to start the online Encyclopedia.

It’s strange that Microsoft would kill such a big program – especially one that promotes education. Yes, I agree that the way we gather information has changed, but taking out Encarta is almost like closing a City Library.

I wonder if Microsoft has something else up their sleeve. It’s not like them to discontinue something so big. I would think that Encarta could be sold for a good chunk of change or even turn Open Source.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Balmer has some other plan.

Will You Celebrate Earth Hour? Is it Worth It?

At 8:30 PM your time, Earthhour.org is encouraging you to turn off your lights to say “Yes! I care about the Earth”. Is turning off lights the answer?

It’s all about global warming. We use too much resources which release Carbon emissions and therefore, warm up the planet. Our children will then be living in a ecological nightmare.

There are some that say there is no real proof to show we are affecting the planet from raising in temperature. There are others that will argue we are going through a cycle that will revert back eventually. Maybe it’s just the fact the Earth is getting older, the moon is getting a millimeter closer and we are orbiting the Sun at a Whopping 67,000 Miles per Hour.

So we set aside an hour to turn off lights. Will that make a difference? Well, it will until we turn back on those lights. At least it’s 8:30 PM in your timezone. Could you imagine the powerdrain if the world turned back on the lights at the same time?

Earth Hour says if you don’t turn off the lights, you are saying NO to the Earth and yes to global warming. But if you have switched all your lights to energy saving bulbs and done your part in other ways, will you be a hypocrite for not doing Earth Hour?

However you look at it, there is a statement there. Be aware of your environment. It saves you money and could possibly help with Global warming. Happy Earth Hour, everyone

Cornflicker and the April Fool’s Day Joke of Doom

How many of the geeks out there are safe from Conflicker, a nasty little worm set to go all doomsday on us on April 1st? Hopefully, 99.9% of us are (there’s never a 100% guarantee). I know I am, as is every machine on my home network and that I have control over at work.

But what about those family members that are far away, or at least aren’t using a machine on our home networks? What happens on April 1st to them? Are they protected? And how can you help them find out if they are infected, and get them cleaned up pronto?

A great little article in USAToday listed an easy way to check and see if a machine is infected. Using the browser, go to any of these three sites:

microsoft.com
symantec.com
mcafee.com

If these sites load in any browser, then Conflicker is not installed on the machine and things are good. But to be on the safe side, you should also be sure whatever virus program is being used is updated and being updated automatically.

If you cannot get to those sites in the browser, then you have Conflicker on your PC. And this baby isn’t easy to get rid of. The article suggested two different sites to try:

Enigma’s Conflicker removal tool
Microsoft’s removal tool

The Enigma and Microsoft tools work because Conflicker doesn’t have their URLa blacklisted inside the worm. That may change as Conflicker mutates, but for now the removal tool is available (and free) from both places. I tried the Enigma one myself and downloaded and installed it very easily. The Microsoft site seemed to be overloaded and I could not fully test it, but Microsoft also claims that if you still can’t get help from their site, you can call them toll-free at 1-866-PCSAFETY.

This is one April Fool’s joke I hope we can all avoid.

Windows Defender 1.55.543.0 Breaks Vista Genuine License?

Okay, I’m having a little panic attack, which may turn into a big panic attack shortly. I came home from work and opened up my laptop (that had just been at work with me), and it rebooted itself (!!) and came up with an error message saying my copy of Windows Vista was not genuine and that I would not receive any more updates. It suggested I remove some older pieces of spyware checkers that may be on my system, including PC-cillin, a free trial that was on my Dell when I got it last year. I checked the security settings and sure enough, PC-cillin was show as a program being used in Windows Defender, although it was turned off.

I attempted to remove PC-cillin, only to find it is not installed on my machine. I went out searching for any kind of removal instructions, and found lots of instructions, none of which worked for me, as there is no TrendMicro (maker of PC-cillin) folder anywhere, nor is the program shown as installed, nor the executable the runs PC-cillin. But Windows still seems to think it’s there, and since I can’t seem to remove it, I guess I’m screwed.

I did reboot and did not get the “you are not a genuine user” error, but I’m still leery. The only update I got today was for the Windows Defender definition update 1.55.543.0, which of course cannot be removed. If I could remove it, I would, as I think it may have been what broke Vista. I’ve done some deep searching and no one, thus far, is reporting this issue online. I have to wonder what I’ll find tomorrow.

Anyone else experiencing any issues? My laptop is a Dell 1525, if that helps. My Vista desktop machine seems to be unaffected, but it also has not received any updates in a few days, whereas this laptop seems to be getting updates almost daily, which has been bothering me, to be honest. Now I’m wondering if I should refuse future Windows Defender updates, so I don’t get anything else broken. I know on my Gateway tablet, I had to stop taking IE updates because they kept breaking things on my tablet functions, and I’m wondering a bit if this is the same thing, just a new day.
