Twitch Introduces Twitch Affiliate Program

Twitch has introduced the Twitch Affiliate Program.  It is for streamers who are not part of the Twitch Partner Program, but who are striving toward that goal. Twitch will decide which of their non-partnered creators is eligible for the Twitch Affiliate Program.

Introducing the Twitch Affiliate Program, which helps us expand that commitment to include tens of thousands of non-partnered creators. The program allows eligible streamers to start earning income on Twitch while building their audience, and provides a stepping stone to bridge the gap between emerging streamer and Twitch Partner. At launch, Affiliates will be able to start Cheering with Bits on their channel so their communities have an on-platform choice for showing support.

Twitch streamers cannot apply to be in the Twitch Affiliate Program. Twitch will invite streamers who qualify to sign up for it. Invitations are expected to roll out gradually over the next several weeks.

Qualifications include:

  • At least 500 total minutes broadcast in the last 30 days
  • At least 7 unique broadcast days in the last 30 days
  • An average of 3 concurrent viewers or more over the last 30 days
  • At least 50 followers

Twitch will provide participating Affiliates a share of the revenue Twitch receives from Bits equal to 1 cent per Bit used to Cheer for them, subject to certain terms and conditions. Twitch Partners get Custom Cheermotes – Twitch Affiliates do not.

Twitch Partners payout timeframe is 45 days, and payout fees are covered by Twitch. Twitch Affiliates payout timeframe is 60 days, and the Affiliate has to cover the payout fees themselves.

GNC #1195 FCC Buzzkill

More bad news in the FCC Buzzkill operations to impact small business by allowing price controls to be removed in areas where there is no competition. I also share with you some information that distresses me in a very big way. We kick off episode 1200 preparations as well. Be sure to check back on the site next week for the Liveblog of videos and pictures from NAB.  Also big announcement on a special interview I am doing that will be an incredible episode in the return of Podcast Legends.

Microsoft Introduces To-Do

Microsoft has introduced a new, intelligent task management app that makes it easy to plan and manage your day. It is called Microsoft To-Do, and it is now available in Preview.

To-Do comes from the team behind the Wunderlist app, and delivers a smarter, more personal and intuitive way to help people stay organized and get the most out of every day. It is powered by Office 365 integration and an intelligent algorithm.

To-Do helps you to create a list for anything – for work, home projects or just groceries. You can keep track of deadlines by adding reminders, due dates and notes, and personalize it with colorful themes. You can access your lists anywhere with the To-Do apps for iPhone, Android phone, Windows 10 devices and the web.

Every morning, To-Do gives you a clean slate called My Day. You can put in whatever tasks that you want to accomplish that day. Tap a lightbulb icon to access Intelligent Suggestions. The app will show you to-dos from the day before, what’s due, or upcoming, and other helpful suggestions based on To-Do’s algorithm. You can add the ones you want to get done to My Day.

Tumblr Releases Cabana

Tumblr announced the release of a brand new app. It’s called Cabana. Right now, the app is for iOS, only. (Tumblr says the Android version should be out in a few weeks).

Cabana allows people to video chat with up to five friends and watch stuff together. In other words, it allows you and five of your friends to watch the same video at the same time – and talk about it. It is a video based chat, not a text based chat.

TechCrunch reported that Cabana is not designed to interoperate with Tumblr’s product, and it doesn’t take advantage of existing relationships between Tumblr users. It seems to me that this means that you won’t have to worry about Cabana suddenly trying to connect you to strangers.

Any friend in the “room” can select a YouTube video for the group to watch together. Tumblr says that you must be at least 17 years old to download Cabana. It requires iOS 9.0 or later. In a post on Tumblr about Cabana, there is the implication that Tumblr has some ideas about “where to go with it”, and that maybe they will add more features later.

GNC #1194 Facebook Tragedy

The Facebook tragedy that happened yesterday is just another of a series of horrific happenings online. I am thoroughly disgusted with the lengths humans go to gain attention and fame at the expense of their victims. We sadly see more of these types events as we move forward, but it really takes a sick individual to kill someone in cold blood while live. Let us hope law enforcement finds this individual before he harms someone else. I have that story and all the news of the day.

Organize Your Saved Posts into Collections on Instagram

Instagram introduced its bookmarking tool in December of 2016. Now, Instagram is adding a way for people to organize the bookmarked posts that they saved into collections. This feature reminds me of Pinterest boards. Both allow users to gather up a selection of things that other users have posted, that fit one theme or topic, in one easy to view place.

On Instagram, bookmarking allows people to save photos that other people have posted. There is a little bookmark shaped icon underneath each Instagram photo. Press and hold the bookmark, and you automatically save that photo.

Collections take this simple process one step further. You can now create as many collections on Instagram as you like, and give each their own title. Sort your bookmarks into the appropriate collection. You can now go back and view a specific collection any time you want, without having to sort through your bookmarks to find them.

Instagram says that, since they introduced the ability to save posts, 46% of Instagrammers have saved at least one post. People save posts that they want to see again. For example, Instagram notes that some people are saving photos that will help them plan their next trip, or to remind them of something they want to purchase. Of course, there will always be people who save photos and videos of animals.

The collections you make on Instagram are private (just like your saved posts are). No one can see them except for you. The update that allows you to make collections in Instagram is available for iOS and Android as part of Instagram 10.16.

Plex Adds Timeline View for Photos

Plex logoDigital photos are ubiquitous in modern life. Nearly everyone is walking around at all times with at least one device that contains a built-in camera. That makes it easy to capture everything from big events to everyday life moments, and preserve those memories forever. But this ability to easily take and save pictures does have its drawbacks. The biggest one of them being the avalanche of content that users have to navigate thru when they want to find a specific photo.

Software developers have done a lot of work in recent years to make it easier for users to find their photos. One such developer is media-center creators Plex, who recently added a Timeline View to the photo viewer built into its apps:

Say goodbye to searching through folders upon folders to find that photo you are looking for! Chronological clusters make it easier than ever to see all your precious memories in the order that they happened. Scroll quickly through your whole photo collection, watching time go by as quickly or slowly as your fingers decide in our beautiful mosaic layout.

This new feature from Plex will soon be available to all users. For now, it’s available on a preview basis for users who are subscribed to the Plex Pass premium service.

Wireless Charging

I‘ve always been a bit on the fence when it comes to wireless charging. The wireless charger itself still needs to be plugged in with a wire.

Back in October I ended up buying a Samsung wireless charger when I upgraded phones. I ended up using it a bit, but generally found that it was more desirable to physically plug my phone in at home in order to take advantage of the super fast wired Samsung charging. The wireless charging process was not as fast and therefore not as convenient when needing to give the phone a quick 10 or 15 minute juice-up.

So, the wireless charger mostly sat unused.

Recently I bought a new car, a 2017 Toyota Yaris iA. The new car has a space in front of the gear shift in the mid center stack perfect for a large phone that includes USB and a 12-volt power socket. I found myself wondering if I plugged the Samsung wireless charger into a 2.1 amp-12 volt power source, would the wireless charger work properly or not.

I experimented and found that the wireless charger works perfectly well with a 2.1 amp 12-volt power source. The next steps were easy. I used a quantity of the rubber grip mat stuff to make the forward slanted phone area flat, and plugged in the Samsung wireless charger. Since the 12-volt socket only has power when the car’s ignition is turned on, I can simply leave the 12-volt charger plugged in all the time just as if it were in my house connected to an AC power source without fear of it running down the car’s battery.

When I get in the car, I simply lay the phone on the Samsung wireless charger and as soon as the ignition comes on while I’m driving the phone is charging without me having to futz around with plugging wires in. Also, the phone connects to the car’s audio system via stereo Bluetooth, making for a 100% seamless experience.

My conclusion is that wireless charging is most useful in an automotive environment, provided that there’s a flat, convenient area for the wireless charger to rest and the power socket is tied to the car’s ignition.

PAPAGO GoSafe 30G Dashcam Review

The PAPAGO GoSafe 30G Dashcam is the third exposure I have had to their dashcams. I last reviewed the GoSafe 520 a couple of years ago.  The GoSage 30G was a completely revamped Dashcam with some new great features and one feature that I could have done without.

The new Dashcam is capable of Full HD up to 1080P @ 60FPS with a 2.7 inch LCD screen with full GPS position logging.  The 140-degree wide-angle recording view gives you an incredible recorded POV. The dashcam has full motion detection so that it automatically starts recording and stores the recording every 5 minutes unless the G-Sensor is activated by a sudden impact and then the device will automatically lock the file so it is not overwritten. You have the ability to also take a snapshot at any time by simply holding the snapshot button for 3 seconds.  The dashcam will also record video anytime the car is sitting still and it detects the car being bumped. This can help you identify someone that may have hit your car and left the scene.

The Papago GoSafe 30G came with a couple of features that worked very well in the daytime but one struggled at night. It comes with Lane Departure Warning System and Front Collision Warnings System.  While both warning systems worked great during daylight hours the Lane Departure Warning System false alarmed while driving at night. The roads in Hawaii are in many places 2 feet narrower than what they are on the mainland, whenever I was on a narrower road and not exactly in the middle of the lane the number of false warning for lane departure was almost excessive. I did not have this trouble during the daylight hours at all and the front collision warning system worked well day and nite. I must commend Papago on the FCWS system as it alerted me to cars braking hard in front of me.

Some other great driver assists features that work well including Stop Sign Recognition, Stop and Go, Driver Fatigue Warning, and Headlight Reminder all worked well day and nite. The Stop and Go feature primarily designed to detect when the car in front of you has moved after sitting still for more than 10 seconds works great in heavy traffic as well. If you have a late model car that does not have tire pressure sensors the dashcam also integrates with the Papago TireSafe D10E TPMS (sold separately), the GoSafe 30G can quickly grasp your tires’ pressure and temperature in real-time and display it on the screen.

Both Day and Nite video are exceptional and the Papago team have made significant improvements to the nite vision video quality. Priced at $172 this is a great product to add to your car, my dashcam has already recorded 2 separate accidents that I have been able to provide to the driver of the vehicle hit including one side swipe impact. You just never know today when you need to prove you were not at fault in an accident.

These are the full resolution videos 100mb per minute of video so depending on your internet connection they may load slow.
