Turntable.fm is Shutting Down

Posted by JenThorpe at 10:49 PM on November 26, 2013

turntable logoSay goodbye to turntable.fm. Their official blog states that, “as much as we love turntable.fm”, they have decided to shut it down for good. Instead, they are going to focus their efforts on Turntable Live.

Turntable.fm has been around for about 2 years. According to the official blog, the community has played over 400 million songs in about a million rooms in two years time. In other words, it isn’t going to be shut down due to lack of use. From their blog:

“As much as we all love turntable.fm, we have decided to shut it down to fully concentrate on the Live experience. It was a tough decision to make because we love this community so much, but the cost of running a music service has been too expensive and we can’t outpace it with our efforts to monetize it and cut costs. If we also want to give Turntable Live a real shot, we need to fully focus on it.”

Visit the Turntable official blog to find a link that will let you export your turntable.fm playlists and songs to Spotify or CSV. They are making all the avatars they designed accessible. There is a last day party planned that will happen on turntable.fm on December 2, 2013. Those who are extremely attached to the service may be excited to learn that there will be a special t-shirt available for purchase.

4oD on the Roku

Posted by Andrew at 4:59 PM on November 26, 2013

4oDHurrah – 4oD (4 on Demand) is now available on the Roku in the UK! It looks like this is breaking news as there’s no mention of it on either Roku‘s or Channel 4‘s websites and I only happened to notice when I was checking for new channels. A few tweets are beginning to appear. Having a quick rummage, it looks on a par with the web version but without some of the personalisation features.

For non-UK residents, Channel 4 is one of the four terrestrial broadcasters (BBC, ITV, C4 and C5). The BBC’s iPlayer and Channel 5′s Demand 5 are already on the Roku, leaving ITV as the last network to get their catch-up TV service onto the Roku. Hurry up!

Rovio electrifies Angry Birds with new levels

Posted by Alan at 8:06 AM on November 26, 2013

Fans of the Rovio series of games can rejoice today, as the Finnish game maker is rolling out an update to its flagship mobile product. While it’s probably no longer the most popular Angry Birds, the original has become a classic in the minds of many gamers.

“Today Angry Birds received an electrifying new update with 30 fun-filled levels set in Professor Pig’s lab”, the company states. It then proceeds to describe that customers will find the new levels contain a bonus — the Bomb Bird has now become electrified. “His temper has grown after he accidentally stumbles upon powerful potions and electricity in the Professor’s lab”, as Rovio describes it.

Not to let a marketing opportunity fail to pass them by, the studio is also pushing a new tee-shirt emblazoned with the logo “shockwave”. It has also release a short trailer video to get you familiar with this latest update. You can watch the video below, but beating the levels is something we can’t help you with.

Twitch Cracks Down on Non-Gaming Content

Posted by JenThorpe at 7:01 PM on November 25, 2013

TwitchTwitch is a great place to check out if you want to watch people play video games. For example, I’ve been watching people stream as they play the beta of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. Its awesome to get a glimpse of what will be in the upcoming expansion.

Sadly, though, it seems that some of the people who use Twitch to stream themselves playing video games are abusing the service. Recently, Twitch streamer Darckobra was banned after he chose to do some “not safe for work” (and completely inappropriate) things while streaming. I’ll leave you to visit the Gamer Revolution article for further details about exactly what happened.

The guy, and his wife, were playing a PS4 game called The Playroom. The game uses the PlayStation Camera and requires a DualShock 4 wireless controller. The camera shows your living room on the screen, and adds playful little robots that you can interact with. In other words, it is an augmented reality “game” that is designed to show off what the PS4 can do.

Twitch sent out the following tweets to show that they will be cracking down on “non-gaming” content:

It is possible to stream The Playroom through Twitch.tv (or Ustream) through the Live From PlayStation feature. Parents should be aware that watching a stream of The Playroom may or may not be appropriate for children to view. That’s rather sad, since it looks to me like The Playroom is something that is primarily entertaining to children.

Get the KitKat experience with KK Launcher

Posted by Alan at 4:30 AM on November 25, 2013

It’s been almost a month since Google unleashed the Nexus 5, featuring Android 4.4 KitKat. Since then, customers have scrambled to find ways of getting the mobile OS, or at least the experience of it, onto their current phones. As Geek News Central explained previously, all of the APK files can be downloaded and installed, though there a few tricks to getting Google Experience Launcher working. If you are feeling geeky, you can also unlock and root your phone, then install the ROM.

Now a new launcher from the folks at XDA Developers can bring the experience with a simple Launcher app. “KK Launcher offers a variety of customization options like setting up desktop text size, hiding the search bar, and modifying icon scale. The functionality can be expanded because this launcher supports icon themes designed for other launchers such as Apex, Go, Nova, and ADW”.

You can download the new launcher free from the Google Play store. The performance is pretty amazing. Scrolling is smooth, and transitions are handled quickly.

BlueFlame Named CES Award Honoree

Posted by JenThorpe at 3:39 PM on November 24, 2013

BlueFlame logoBlueFlame has been chosen as an International CES Innovation 2014 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree. It is for their product called The Conductor that was recently launched. It offers you a new way to charge your smartphone.

The Conductor can power up your iPhone 5 very quickly via its magnetic charging case and sleek wall plate. Put the wall plate into a closet outlet and stick your iPhone to its magnetic charger. That’s all you need to do! You can also move The Conductor from one room to another, or take it with you as while traveling.

One obvious advantage of The Conductor is that it is cordless. It avoids the problem people face when they travel and have to untangle a cord before they can charge their phone. Vice President of Product Development at BlueFlame, Craig Small, had this to say:

“We spent a lot of time looking at what was missing from cell phone chargers and created The Conductor as a smart and simple alternative charging solution for the busy mobile device user. The Conductor represents the next level of hands-free, wire-free device charging. It is an honor to see our design receive this recognition from the CES Innovations committee.”

You can check out The Conductor from BlueFlame at the 2014 International CES. It will be on display in The Venetian. The Conductor will also be displayed at CES Unveiled: The Official Media Event of the International CES on Sunday, January 5, 2014, in the South Seas Ballroom C at Mandalay Bay.

Your Smart TV Spied on You – LG Admits Collecting Information

Posted by J Powers at 9:24 AM on November 23, 2013

LG LogoLG – a South Korean company that makes multiple electronics including “Smart TVs” – admitted that their televisions reported back watching habits to the company. Even if the consumer selected a preference that essentially was suppose to deactivate the tracking option.

LG would monitor viewing duration, how the consumer selected channels and filenames on the connected devices (such as USB drives) to deliver better targeted ads. A blog by Doctor Beet first noticed this issue as he wrote about how he turned off the “Collection of watching info” to off, but still recorded how the TV continued to send information to LG.

Blogger Graham Cluley then posted this LG statement stating that a future firmware update will fix this feature. Further, the company will remove the data collection of USB and share drives while assuring customers they never used or retained this data.

In the meantime, if you own an LG TV and do not want information sent to the company, you can block certain websites including (via Tom’s Hardware):
