Posted by Andrew at 6:15 PM on January 28, 2013

iHealth LogoJamie chats to Adam about the iHealth blood pressure monitor, an FDA-approved device that uses Bluetooth to transfer health data to a smartphone or tablet.

The new version  of the iHealth blood pressure monitor builds takes the original docking device and adds wireless data transfer using Bluetooth. The first version integrated with iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads but the Bluetooth feature expands the potential of the monitor to other smartphones and tablets. A cloud service complements the free app providing tracking and monitoring features and integration with other healthcare systems.

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 5:30 PM on January 28, 2013

Dakim BrainfitnessDakim Brainfitness is the leader in the development of brain fitness products. The products have been created to maintain and enhance cognitive fitness. This is important as both seniors and boomers continue to live longer and want to remain active. The programs are clinical tested by UCLA scientist and are based on standardize neurological tests and programs. These programs have shown significant improvement in memory and concentration both immediately and over time in most users.

There are several products available: an integrated hardware and software program available to senior living environments, a professional software program that can be used by doctors and clinicians that work with the elderly and starting in March there will be a cloud base program for the consumer. The pricing varies depending on what program is being used. As the overall population continues age programs like this will increase in importance.

IOGear Wireles 5×2 HD Matrix announced

Posted by Alan at 4:58 PM on January 28, 2013

Welcome to IOGEAR USA - Rackmount KVM, Wireless Audio VideoIOGear makes some pretty cool hardware, some of which I use in my own home. Most recently the company made a trip to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada to show off one of its newest offerings — the Wireless 5×2 HD Matrix.

The name may be a bit cryptic, so an explanation is required here. Perhaps you have heard rumors of wireless HDMI? Well, it is here now and this device has five ports and a receiver to prove it — that is four inputs and one output. There is full switching capability and it has a claimed range of one hundred feet. Plug in all of your devices and then place the receiver with a TV in another room and control everything wirelessly, even when two TV’s are displaying content from different devices. For instance, one can be using the Blu-Ray player while another plays DVR content. No more need for two boxes.

A two TV setup will run you $399 and the device will be available at the end of March. But honestly, you need to watch the demo posted below to really appreciate this technology.

UnitedHealthcare and Konami Bringing Dance Dance Revolution to the Classroom

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 10:20 AM on January 28, 2013

UnitedHealthcare Brian Landwehr of UnitedHealthcare talked about their new partnership with Konami, the gaming company to bring the Dance, Dance Revolution Classroom Edition into schools. This is part of the UnitedHealthcare’s Activate Program which also includes dietary and mental health curriculum. The idea is to increase kids physical activity by using something they are already doing, playing video games. The program is tied into each school current curriculum. The student and their parents along with the school can track the student’s progress throughout the year.

At the present time this program is being introduced by UnitedHealthcare into schools that they already have a partnership with. These schools are being used to pilot the program. However the Dance, Dance Revolution Classroom Edition is also available at retail stores and through Konami who will work with directly with school systems.

GrandCare Systems

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 4:30 AM on January 28, 2013

GrandCare System GrandCare Systems is a comprehensive software system that can be used to help caregiver monitor their love ones from a distant. It was originally created to help maintain social contact, through chats, email, pictures, video, games, reminders and things like local weather and news. Overtime it was discovered that it could also be used to monitor health conditions, such as glucose level, blood pressure, and other medical information. It can capture the information on site and in almost real-time. It does this through add ons such as a device that indicates when a pill-box has been open or when a scale has been used. These add ons are connected to the main device wirelessly. Alerts can be sent to the caregiver either through email or text message based on the need of the patient.

The GrandCare Systems is software based and it is built into a specific device at the present time. This is something they hope to change in the future so that the software can be used on various devices. The caregiver may access the alerts and information on any device. The base cost for the device and software is $600. There is an additional cost based on the number of add ons. There is also a monthly fee to for text messages and email to the caregiver.

If you have an elderly parent living alone, this can help you give you peace of mind.  Knowing that you can still care for them even if you are not there.

Combat Creatures Attacknid at CES

Posted by Andrew at 6:40 PM on January 27, 2013

Combat Creatures' AttacknidThe mechanised carnage and wanton destruction of Battlebots and Robot Wars is great fun but you need some serious robotics chops to build that level of machine. The Attacknid is an affordable toy alternative from from Combat Creatures - Andy McCaskey finds out more.

The Attacknid is a remote-controlled insect-like robot with a modular gun that fires discs or balls. The premise is simple…you and a friend (or friends) control the robots, shooting at each other’s machine. Three hits to the “battle brain” of the robot and it’s dead. Lots of fun and I can imagine this will be a great Christmas present.

Available in the UK now and will be coming to the USA in the fall for around $100.

MyCharge

Posted by Alan at 12:51 PM on January 27, 2013

myChargeWe have all been there — you are out and about and suddenly find that the battery in your smartphone has died. There are, of course, portable solutions for this. I spend a good deal of time hiking and camping in remote locations and have used a solar charger in the past to solve this problem, but it is a slow process.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, MyCharge unveiled a whole new line of portable charging solutions. Depending on your choice from the new lineup, you can potentially charge up to three devices at one time. There are a variety of choices and also a variety of colors and designs to suit everyone’s tastes.

The new line, which will include the Lightning connector for Apple, is expected to launch in the April-May timeframe. Depending on the charger you decide on, the price can range from $39 to $129.

Medfolio Pill Organizer

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 11:55 AM on January 27, 2013

Medfolio Do you have a relative or love one who is on a lot of medication that they are constantly forgetting to take. Perhaps you have trouble keeping track of your own medicine. If these cases sound familiar to you then you may be interested in the new Pill box by Medfolio. Julie Fulmer-Mason a pharmacist is the creator of the pill-box by Medfolio.

This is an old fashion pill-box brought into the twenty-first century. The pill-box comes with a CD which the user down loads to their computer. They connect the box to the computer by USB. They then enter the medicine they are taking, how often they are supposed to take it, how many days they are to take it for and what time of day they should take it into the easy to use software. Then they put the pills in the proper box. This can be either set up by the user or often their pharmacist will set it up for them.

Once it is set up then when it is a time to take a pill the box will send out both an audio and visual reminder. The actual compartment where the correct pill is will also light up. The user can remove a compartment and take it with them and still get a reminder by either text or email. The user can print out a chart of the pills they are taking and place that chart on the pill-box lid along with sample pills. The patient can take the box along with them to the doctor, that way both the patient and the doctor will know exactly what medicine the patient is on. There is also a  cloud service available which can be used to keep track of things remotely. Great for families with elderly parents who live far away.

The basic pill-box is $248 and the WiFi version with cloud service is $298.00. There is an $8.00 monthly service fee for the text and email reminders.  The Medfolio Pill Organizer is available through Medfolio,  Amazon, QVC and Buy.com
