Wi-Fi security and the stark realities

Posted by geeknews at 5:17 AM on February 8, 2003

My wife was not real happy about me going wireless. But now instead of being in the office I can be out in the living room with everyone on the laptop. This allows me to complete some work that needs to be wrapped up. But being I have a pretty significant network behind my main firewall the Wi-Fi device has me concerned about possible security issues.

I have followed the wardriving crowd and they have gotten a lot of mixed press but the overall results are interesting. The following are some averages they have found 27.9% have Wep Enabled, 72.1% Wep Disabled, 35.3% using default SSID & 31.4% default identifier with wep disabled. Folks this is simply amazing. I can not even imagine what type of data is being exploited out there.
